Education officials sent to Verulam school following learner unrest

District officials have been sent to Glenhaven Secondary School in Verulam, north of Durban following yesterday's riot by pupils.

Learners destroyed school property and stoned police and security officers because they were unhappy about a fence being erected. They claim the fence will restrict their movement on the campus.

The department says it is disappointed by the actions of the pupils involved.

Reaction Unit's Prem Balram says pupils burnt bins and damaged gates and classrooms.

KwaZulu-Natal Education spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi says allegations of racism have also been made.

"Learners are in their classroom, while others are outside. We are also going to be investigating allegations of racist utterances that apparently sparked the reaction by pupils."

The situation at the school today is calm and police are on standby.

Meanwhile, there are less than 50 days to go until the matric Class of 2019 sit for their final exams.

MEC Kwazi Mshengu launched the 50 day countdown in Umlazi yesterday.

He is urging pupils to knuckle down and do the necessary work to ensure they are ready for their papers.

Mshengu says the choices Grade 12s make in the coming weeks must be for the betterment of their futures.
