EC court sentences Enyobeni tavern owners
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
A court in the Eastern Cape sentenced the Enyobeni tavern owners to a fine of R5 000 each or 100 days behind bars.
Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu were this week found guilty of selling liquor to minors.
They ran the tavern where 21 schoolchildren died during a ‘pens down’ party two years ago.
Magistrate Kevin von Bratt handed down the sentencing in the East London Regional Court on Friday.

"I believe the imposition of a fine would be appropriate. When considering the possible suspension of part of it, I would have to say that that would probably be futile.
"It is difficult to imagine any scenario where the two accused would be issued with another liquor licence at present under present circumstances.
"Having tried to balance all the interests as fairly as possible and considering the applications which have been made and the interests of the community, each of the accused is sentenced to a fine of R5 000 or 100 days imprisonment."
