Eastern Cape nurses to face SANC after death of teen
Updated | By Newswatch
The Health Ombudsman has referred two nurses from an Eastern Cape clinic to the South African Nursing Council for unprofessional conduct.
The two sisters from the healthcare facility in Motherwell are said to have turned away a teenage girl who was gang-raped.
Zenizole Vena was told to go to the police station instead, a two-kilometre walk away.
The 15-year-old girl was found on the street near the police station by a community member who took her to the station before an ambulance was called.
Zenizole died while waiting for help.

At a briefing in Pretoria today, Ombudsman Taole Mokoena said the nurses dishonoured their pledges.
Professor Mokoena says he has also recommended that the Department of Health take disciplinary action within 30 days.
"For failure to holistically assess Miss Vena and use proper channels of referral within the district, her failure to advocate on behalf of the patient, placing the life of Miss Vena in danger."
