Eastern Cape farmers thankful for KZN assistance

Drought-stricken farmers from the Eastern Cape have thanked their KwaZulu-Natal counterparts for their ongoing support and generosity.

Local farmers have been sending truckloads of grass bales and other feed to the region after hearing about the devastating affects of the drought in the province.

 

Agri Eastern Cape president, Doug Stern says 2017 is the third consecutive year that the Eastern Cape has received below average rainfall.

 

Stern met with farmers from the Mid-Illovo , Eston and Richmond areas last week.

 

Mid-Illovo farm manager, MJ Hillhouse began calling for assistance for Eastern Cape farmers after hearing about the devastating conditions there.

KZN agriculture union, Kwanalu has commended Hillhouse and other local farmers for kick-starting behind the initiative.

 

31 truckloads of grass bails, four loads of yellow maize and molasses have been sent to the Eastern Cape so far.

 

Kwanalu says another 72 truckloads of grass, two loads of yellow maize and another of molasses are ready to be transported.

 

Kwanalu is urging other farmers to get behind the initiative, saying the tables could turn at any point and it could be them in need of assistance.
