DUT reopens following violent protests
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The Durban University of Technology's (DUT) reopened its three campuses that were hit by violent protests on Monday.
The Steve Biko, M.L Sultan and Ritson campuses closed their doors after student demonstrators trashed the varsities' libraries.
The DUT's Alan Khan say they tried to light a fire on the Steve Biko campus.
He says the protests were linked to the delay of National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) payments, late applications and funding allowances.
Despite the closures - online learning continued.
"This extreme level of violence really has no place on any of our campuses and actually in society. We are really disappointed that it had to resort to that.
"At this time of the year students are preparing for the end of year exams.
"Thankfully despite the disruption and the violence, our academic programme has not been negatively affected because since the start of the pandemic last year like all other universities in the country we moved over to online teaching and learning."
Khan says they're working closely with NSFAS and with their financial department to resolve the issues.
