The 750m extension to Durban's popular Golden Mile is set to be opened next month.

Municipal spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela says we can expect to see new restaurants and other local businesses opening their doors along extended promenade.

"As we are about to complete this promenade, we are hoping to break ground next year for two skyscrapers, that is residential apartments and a hotel, just behind the promenade. So that in its own is very interesting, as there will be quite a lot of revenue injected into the city," said Mayisela.

"There are a number of activities in the area that will also boost the uShaka Marine World."

The current development will see the beachfront promenade extend from the harbour mouth on the Point all the way through to Blue Lagoon on the Umgeni river.

The scenic stretch passes a number of iconic Durban landmarks, including uShaka Marine World, the paddling pools, Sunken Gardens, Suncoast Casino, Moses Mabhida Stadium, Blue Lagoon and various hotels and restaurants.

Since the initial upgrade before the 2010 Fifa World Cup, the promenade has become a popular entertainment and exercise attraction for locals and visitors to the city.

Weekends often see families enjoying the sights, while athletes, or those just working on their health and fitness, walk, jog and cycle along the promenade.

Other activities like swimming, surfing, fishing, stand up paddling, diving, and surf skiing, among other things all help cement the area as a key attraction for the city.
