The fire on South Coast Road began before 10am yesterday and raged throughout the day.

Chief Fire Commander at eThekwini Municipality, Enoch Mchunu says petrol stations around the area had to close because of the highly flammable and explosive chemicals and fertiliser being stored in an undamaged section of the warehouse.

"We've seen many fires, but this one of the biggest ones, I must admit. From the hydrants, we are getting fairly sufficient water flows, trying to make sure it doesn't spread to the remaining part of the warehouse that have not  been involved up to now," he said.

Yesterday, three people, including two firefighters, were taken to hospital after sustaining burns. Rescue Care's Garrith Jamieson says at this stage, no further injuries have been reported.

Jamieson says there a dozen of emergency services personnel worked throughout the night.

"There are still multiple firefighters on scene and water carriers constantly coming and going to refuel. The fire is still alight but it's under control at the moment. I urge motorists to please not stop and try and take photos and videos on the highway as this is going to cause major accidents and congestion."

"Yesterday, traffic in the area was gridlocked in the area as curious motorists slowed down or stopped to catch a glimpse and take photos and videos the raging fire and the thick black smoke it's been spewing into the sky," he said.

Sections of various freeways, including the M7 and M4, were also eventually closed last night as a safety precaution.
