Firefighters have been battling the blaze from around 10 this morning.

Paramedics on scene have confirmed that a second firefighter had to be taken to hospital for burns.

Earlier, another firefighter and a worker were also rushed to hospital after they were injured at the scene of the blaze.

About a dozen members of the hazardous chemical control unit are now on the scene.

The rain continues to fall, but has given no visible relief to the firefighting efforts that have been going on the entire day.

Fresh firefighting teams are also expected to take over the firefighting effort in a shift change from this hour - relieving their colleagues  who've been battling the blaze since just before 10am.

East Coast radio's Traffic Guy, Johann von Bargen, has the following advice for anyone affected by the smoke:

1) The wind is starting to die down, and smoke has started to come down lower. JVB advises people to keep their windows and doors shut, and to avoiding using airconditioning units at full blast.

2) He also suggests that if you do need to go outside, to cover your face with a damp cloth before you do so.

3) JVB urges Durban residents not to panic. The smoke will eventually settle.
