Durban tourism numbers picking up

eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda says Durban's tourism numbers are slowly picking up.
This comes after last month's riots dealt a severe blow to the sector.
More than 34 000 visitors made their way to our shores over the long weekend.

Kaunda says it was a much-needed boost for the local economy.
The city says had it not been for the unrest, visitor arrivals were projected to drop by 50% under the country's adjusted level four lockdown last month.
"This past long weekend we attracted visitors that are in access of 30 000 who have spent close to R50 million - a contribution of about R130 million to our GDP," the municipality's Mswawakhe Mayisela says.
Mayisela says the interventions they have introduced to boost safety at key tourism spots are paying off.

"We are working closely with our law enforcement agencies to ensure that there is increased visibility to key tourism strategic points because tourism to us as a city is our gold."
