Durban school shut following allegations of racism

A Sydenham school has been closed following disruptions by pupils who want the acting principal removed.
Learners at Bechet High School protested at the school today - accusing the principal of racism towards pupils and staff.
eThekwini Metro Police and Public Order Police had to be called to calm the situation down and disperse the school children.
The acting principal was appointed three weeks ago following the retirement of the school's previous head.

A pupil who spoke to Newswatch says he doesn't feel comfortable being at the school - if he's at risk of being discriminated against.
"Since she might be coming in as the principal, I am not comfortable with how she will treat us as blacks."
Provincial education spokesperson, Muzi Mahlambi says they've sent district officials to the school.
"We have decided to close the school for today so that we control the situation. This will give us the opportunity to bring all the stakeholders on board and discuss the way forwards."
