Close to 600 people marched from Durban's Suncoast Beach to the Ampitheatre at Battery Beach on Friday to raise awareness about these activities.

The demonstration is being led by the South Durban Environmental Alliance and GroundWork.

They are calling for more action against climate change and pollution.

Environmental activist Desmond D'sa says seismic activities, including those planned for the Wild Coast, will ruin the marine ecosystem.

"What it means is that there is drilling on the bottom of the ocean - fish, whales and all your marine species, your massive marine species. That will be sad. We will lose all our whale population and all our line fish.

"South Africa is abundant in fish, people are taking food home every day all along the coast, and I have seen that."

Local fisherman John Peter Narainsamy, says this will affect their livelihoods.

"Our fisherfolk are the ones who rely on the ocean to sustain the living to catch fish and put food on the table, so we don't want any destruction of the ocean because our fisherfolk, the poor, vulnerable and destitute are the ones who are going to pay the price and suffer."
