The official is alleged to have had sexual relations with an inmate.
The department says he's been suspended pending the investigation.

Spokesperson, Thulani Mdluli says the department is treating the matter as a rape case because of the vulnerability of the inmate involved.
"The investigation - which we are waiting in anticipation - is going to give us more information of what actually happened because initially, the offender didn't say that he raped her.
"It is contravening with our laws and prescripts of our department, irrespective of whether they are in an intimate relationship or whatsoever. The fact of the matter it's against the law of correctional services."
