The Bayhead Road was the root of the problem. Heavy-duty trucks came to a stop on the route leading to the Durban Container Terminal.

Port officials say the problem began on Tuesday when a private terminal received an influx of trucks above its capacity.

Frustrated truckers then decided to break the law and move their trucks onto the oncoming lanes to try to get to the port.

Trucks coming out of the port were then jammed, leading to more chaos.

The Port's General Manager, Moshe Motlohi says staff could not get to work as well.

"They had more trucks coming than the capacity of the depot itself. They took action they have told us that they stopped the trucks from coming in, but it was already late because the congestion on Bayhead Road had already build up," he said.
