Bluff resident Charline Mckenzie says it was a nightmare getting home from work on Tuesday.

She says the situation has not improved on Wednesday morning.

"Terrible, absolutely terrible. It is packed, packed. People are actually stopping on pavements," she said.

The chaos is due to the heavy-duty trucks queuing along Bayhead Road. The vehicles have been waiting to get into the Durban Container Terminal, where there seem to be problems.

As a result of the congestion along Bayhead Road, there is traffic mayhem on routes like the Bluff, Umbilo, Edwin Swales and the M7 eastbound after the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital.

Mckenzie says trucks have been parked off on Edwin Swales Drive since Tuesday night.

"It took us yesterday about two hours to get home. We were gridlocked in between trucks. We actually had to drive over pavements just to get around trucks, through intersections because they would drive over intersections and block the intersections."

"We are trying to get to work on time. We couldn't even send our kids to school," she said.

Durban Metro Police spokesperson, Parboo Sewpersad says officers are on the ground.

He says the problem seems to be coming from terminal one.

"The problem is impacting on the roads as a result of the port operations on the inside. This is impacting on traffic destined to Pier one. The transporters are requested to hold back on dispatching the trucks and allow the traffic to clear."

"Transporters and owners are also requested to reroute the trucks that are en route to the terminal to alleviate further congestion," he said.
