Durban metro police 'will be out in numbers' for shutdown

Police teams will have eyes and ears on the ground in Durban on Monday when the Economic Freedom Fighters national shutdown kicks off.

"No one will be allowed to cause destruction, to disturb others or to harm others," says Durban metro police spokesperson Boysie Zungu. 


EFF leader Julius Malema's promised peaceful demonstrations on Monday when the red berets, ordinary citizens and concerned groups take their frustration over load shedding to the streets.

Local leaders and national police have reminded marchers that any form of criminality or violence will not be tolerated. 


Zungu says their officers will be out in full force. 


"Out police officers will be out in numbers to ensure that there is peace and stability within the city. Those who want to go to work must to go work. Those who want to run their businesses must run their businesses."

The South African National Taxi Council's yet to make public its decision on whether its taxis will be running on Monday. 


The taxi council met with the EFF on Wednesday night.
