Durban M19 protest over 'constant' power cuts - councillor
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
A councillor says a power outage sparked the latest round of protests near Reservoir Hills, west of Durban.
"There was a transformer in an informal settlement that had blown and was on fire. This caused half of Reservoir Hills to go off as well because the switch would have tripped," says Alicia Kissoon.
Kissoon, who is the Ward 23 councillor for Reservoir Hills and Palmiet, says two electricians came to the area but couldn't fix the faulty transformer.
Frustrated residents from the Umgudulu Settlement took to the streets on Tuesday night and demonstrated both sides of the M19.

"The problem is the Umgudulu Settlement has been requesting for that particular transformer to be attended to since just after the [April 2022] floods. They have had temporary restoration and repairs, but it hasn't been fully repaired."
Kissoon says the community is fed up.
"The settlement is suffering with intermittent electricity outages, so the protest yesterday was actually because of the constant electricity outages.”
