Durban loses 2022 Commonwealth Games
Updated | By News24
Durban has lost the right to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, according to widespread reports on Monday.
There had been doubt placed over the KwaZulu-Natal city's hosting of the Games after event organisers had missed various submission deadlines with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula had said towards the end of last month that Durban risked losing out on hosting the showpiece due to cost challenges.
Reports had suggested that the CGF was weighing up its options and that a decision was expected this week, but on Monday afternoon reports across the country began calling the news.

There has still been no official word from either the CGF or the Durban 2022 organising committee, but according to the reports, that was expected to come later on Monday.
Durban was the only city to launch a formal bid to host the Games after Edmonton in Canada withdrew.
No replacement has been named, although Liverpool were eager to offer their services.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held on the Gold Coast in Australia.
