On Saturday officers received information about a car with five occupants travelling from Reservoir Hills towards KwaMashu.

They believed it was the gang that robbed a house in Phoenix last week Thursday after posing as municipal workers.

Officers tracked the vehicle to Inanda Road and a chase ensued.

KZN police spokesperson Thembeka Mbele there was an exchange of fire and the suspects' car crashed into the road barriers.

"The suspects were injured in the collision and two were declared dead on scene while the other three were detained,” says Mbele.

“During a search of the vehicle two firearms, jewellery, cellphones and various other items were found.”

During the initial investigation, it was discovered that one of the suspects is currently out on bail for a robbery that was committed at the Phoenix Plaza in November last year where two jewellery stores were robbed.

Both firearms were seized and will be taken for ballistic testing. The vehicle that crashed was also seized and impounded for further investigation.

The trio will also face charges of possession of suspected stolen property and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
