A hijacking suspect is under police guard in a Durban hospital after he apparently shot himself during a scuffle with his victim.
Police were alerted to a hijacking and kidnapping on Thursday afternoon in Berea.
Authorities say officers spotted the vehicle on Alan Paton Road.
They found the suspect lying on the ground bleeding from his leg.
KZN police say the car owner told authorities a man jumped into his vehicle and got into the driver's seat.
The motorist says while his hijacker and kidnapper was driving, he pulled up the hand brake and stopped the vehicle.
He says during a tussle, the 35-year-old suspect shot himself.
He was arrested and faces charges of carjacking, kidnapping and of possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
Police say they're checking to see if the man is linked to any other cases in KZN.
