They have been reacting to the murder of warrant officer Theena Pillay.

Pillay was gunned down outside his Phoenix home on Sunday while he was heading to work.

He shot back at the gunman, who also died at the scene. The rest of the suspects fled in a white car.

SAPS spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo says they are trying to connect the dots, to see if the hit on Pillay was linked to cases he had been investigating.

"If one looks at the circumstances or the modus operandi, it's quite clear that the member was targeted. We are investigating a particular motive now which we don't want to disclose at this stage because it might impact negatively or jeopardise our investigation."

"But once we have arrested the remaining suspects and we conclusively determine the motive for this attack we will communicate it," he said.

Pillay will be laid to rest today.
