Magistrate Phumlani Bhengu quoted statistics that rank South Africa as having the highest number of drunk driving incidents in the world when handing down his sentence this morning.

Bhengu said it was his court's view that such cases are not taken seriously enough.

In addition to sentencing Bothma to three years in jail, the magistrate fined him R10,000 for drunk driving.

However, Bhengu has granted Bothma leave to appeal his sentence in respect of the prison time and extended his bail pending the outcome thereof.
