Drunk driver handed three year sentence
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
A drunk driver who fled the scene after crashing into a car and seriously injuring two sisters has been given a three year sentence for failing to perform the duties of a driver.
27-year-old Stephan Bothma had been driving back from a rugby match in Durban last June when he crashed into the car Taariqa Archary and Varsha Maharaj had been travelling in.
Bhengu said it was his court's view that such cases are not taken seriously enough.
In addition to sentencing Bothma to three years in jail, the magistrate fined him R10,000 for drunk driving.
Archary was left a paraplegic and Maharaj suffered injuries to the brain.
