This is the view of KZN-based NGO, South Africans Against Drunk Driving.

150 motorists are due to appear in various courts today - after they were arrested over the long weekend on charges of driving under the influence.

Durban Metro Police manned several roadblocks - in Florida Road, Phoenix, Pinetown, Montclair and Durban Central from Thursday.

The group's Caro Smit wants the law to crack down on drunk driving.

"When they appear in court that their licences are suspended immediately for six months as according to the National Road Traffic Act because people are not taking drinking and driving seriously. It is costing our country enormously in terms of death and disability," she said.

Meanwhile, the Road Traffic Management Corporation's Simon Zwane says 20 000 fines were issued across the country over Easter.

"About 800 of them were arrested for various offences including drunk driving driving, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol," he said.
