Umkhanyakude exploring borehole water for drought-hit areas
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Officials in Umkhanyakude are drilling boreholes in the district municipality's drought-affected areas in preparation for the cold Winter months.

Earlier this year, local government allocated drought relief funds to the tune of R18-million to the northern KwaZulu-Natal region.
Umkhanyakude has been badly affected by the on-going green drought.
The municipality's Mduduzi Dlamini says they've hired five contractors to drill the boreholes, in areas including Jozini, where residents protested last week over water outages. He says dam levels remain very low.
"We will be covering some areas as well like Hlabisa, Mtubatuba, Jozini and Umhlabuyalingana. That is not enough. Jozini Dam has low levels of water in the dam. The only dam we can safely say we are surviving on - is the dam of Hluhluwe," Dlamini said.
