Don't collect medical waste on Durban beaches: eThekwini

eThekwini Municipality is advising residents not to collect any debris at four beaches within the metro.

Spokesperson Tozi Mthethwa has confirmed the immediate closure of the uMgeni/Mangrove, Beachwood, Vriginia and Glenashley beaches.
This after the discovery of several loads of medical waste that has washed up at the beaches.
Mthethwa says the beaches will remain closed for at least two weeks to allow for clean-up operations to take place.

"This includes pills as well as condoms. However, these are sealed. So, the health inspectors will have to track who the owners of these products may be and what led to the products being found on the beach," she said.
