Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
Authorities are urging communities to give the gift of life on World Blood Donor Day.

The SA National Blood Service in KZN says it has a reserve stock of just 2.1 days - opposed the recommended five days supply.
Pupils and students normally contribute around 4% of all donations. With school holidays around the corner - the blood bank is urging people to come forward.

Spokesperson, Sifiso Khoza says local communities can help ensure enough blood is collected to get through the holiday period.
"We have major events in allt he eight provinces that we operate in where we will be highlighting the importance of blood donation so that's why we are saying - be there for someone else by donating one unit of blood. You are giving three or more people a chance to be with their loved ones - for another day, birthday, or anniversary," he said.
