SAMA's Mvuyisi Mzukwa says they'll be taking to the streets next month to protest against what they're calling the "collapse of the healthcare system" in KZN.

"The infrastructure is breaking down. If you go into King Edward Hospital while it's raining - you have to have an umbrella because it's bad.

"The issue was raised with the Department of Health and since then nothing was done. We have a severe shortage of staff in our hospitals in terms of our doctors, and the nurses. The issue of safety and security of our staff members is another concern - the conditions are going down all the time," he said.

Mzukwa says they're calling on doctors, specialists and other medical staff to join their march on May 5. Meanwhile, the KZN Health Department's said more than R39-billion will go towards improving healthcare in the province.
