Disaster teams evaluating Kennedy Road damage
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
eThekwini Disaster Management teams are at the Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban to assess the damage following the fire that ripped through dozens of homes last night.
Hundreds of people have been left homeless in the wake of the blaze - with firefighters saying yesterday around 250 dwellings were gutted.
Residents are digging through the rubble to find any materials and belongings that were not destroyed - with some already trying to rebuild their homes.
Those who have spoken to Newswatch believe the number of shacks affected could be much higher than the figure given.

The community is hopeful new building material will be sent to them.
A soup kitchen is also in operation. This resident, also affected spoke to Newswatch.
"I have no money now and my child is here for the holidays. The councillor is here but I don't know who my councillor is. They haven't told us anything. We are continuing to clean our site, they have not told us if the material is coming," she says.
