The organisation's founder, Imtiaz Sooliman says the 85 confirmed fatalities so far show the magnitude of the storms and flooding.

Sooliman made the remarks this morning while collecting cans of tinned food that will be distributed amongst communities affected by the disaster.

East Coast Radio and the Gift of the Givers have partnered to collect and distribute canned food to those in need.

"When we got the call from East Coast Radio saying they wanted to partner with us, we got excited. We have worked together so many times before -- with the water and drought crisis and Toy Story and we just have such good synergy," explained Sooliman.

Sooliman says with East Coast Radio's brand power in KwaZulu-Natal, corporate support and positioning amongst listeners, they knew the initiative could make a difference.

"It just made perfect sense that when the need was so big and the crisis was so big," Sooliman continued.

"Never before in a storm have 85 people died."

You can take part in the #ECRCan initiative by dropping off canned food at East Coast Radio House in Umhlanga Rocks Drive, north of Durban until 6pm this evening.
