Dept of Labour given 8 months to finish work on Durban offices

Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Sihle Zikalala has given the Department of Labour eight months to finish construction at its main Durban offices.

The department's employment and labour centre building, the biggest in the country, was closed in 2016 after it was declared unsafe for occupation due to burst pipes and sewage leaks, among other problems.
Development work at the building on Masonic Grove in the city centre has been plagued by delays.

It reopened in 2019 while still under construction.
Zikalala stopped by for an inspection on Monday, revealing that almost R6 million has been lost to delays.
"The delays are attributed to COVID-19 and lack of coordination between the department and the client, especially in areas where they do work that is out of what is agreed on. It is negatively impacting the people. You have seen the queues.”
