Delta variant most dominant in KZN, Nzimande says

The Delta variant is now the most common Covid-19 variant in KwaZulu-Natal.

It has been located in six districts in the province.
"The Delta variant increased significantly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal," Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Blade Nzimande said on Wednesday.
"These Delta genomes were sampled from multiple locations across six districts of KwaZulu-Natal; Harry Gwala, Zululand, Ilembe, eThekwini, King Cetshwayo and Ugu."

Nzimande briefed the media on the restrictions and measures for the tertiary education sector and students.
"Although initial sequences were from cases with recent travel history, there is now clear evidence of community transmission of the Delta variant in South Africa."

Over three miilion Covid vaccines have been administered thus far.
The country has seen a spike in both Covid-19-related deaths and cases in the last 24-hour period.
At total of 19 506 new infections have been confirmed.
The pandemic death toll's climbed to 60 647 after 383 more people lost their lives.
