Delta variant detected in 6 KZN districts: Zikalala

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala says the Delta variant, which was first identified in India, has been detected in six of the province’s districts.
"These districts are Harry Gwala, eThekwini, Zululand, King Cetshwayo, Ugu, Ilembe," Zikalala said on Wednesday.

He was speaking at a press conference in Mayville on the province's battle plans for the third Covid-19 wave and revised measures to mitigate the Delta variant.
Zikalala said the province registered 483 new cases in the past 24 hours.

"The increase in the number of new cases occurred in 10 of the 11 districts across the province, with the exception of Harry Gwala District.
"The province currently has 10 532 active cases, and has sadly registered 10 689 deaths due to the virus. May the souls of the dearly-departed rest in peace. The number of recoveries currently stands at 330 316 people.
"We are observing that five districts are on resurgence, eThekwini, Uthukela, Umgungundlovu, Amajuba and Umzinyathi. It is now a race against the third wave for us in these districts."
