Defence attorney in Newlands baby case speaks
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The defence attorney for the Durban woman who allegedly threw her newborn baby girl down a storm water drain in Newlands East says it is possible - that she may have an underlying medical problem.
Jacques Botha stood before the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court yesterday where his 32-year-old client was granted bail of R5000.
He said it's possible that she's suffering from pre and post-natal depression. He's been speaking to us outside court.
"Clearly, a mother doesn't do this unless there is an underlying problem. I'm not giving a medical opinion - I know I'm not competent to do so but I think it's clear that there has to be some serious underlying issue which I'm sure will come to light shortly. The [family] are quite distraught about this."
