Decade-old case put to bed after baby snatcher sentenced to 12 years
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
A 34-year-old woman has been handed a 12-year sentence for kidnapping a one-week-old baby.

She was in the Empangeni Regional Court this week after pleading guilty to the abduction nearly 10 years ago.
The woman is said to have gone into a house in Jozini after noticing baby clothes on the washing line.
She pretended to work for the government and told the baby's mother that she helped parents with birth certificates so they can apply for social grants.

The NPA's Natasha Kara explains that the woman saw the opportunity to steal the child and flee to Johannesburg.
"The effect of the crime is evident in the victim impact statement by the mother of the child." she adds.
"In the statement, the mother mentioned she had a harrowing experience. She mentions that she wants nothing to do with the accused because she has experienced such great and immense pain."
