The death toll from Wednesday morning's shootout between suspected robbers and police on the N2 near King Shaka International Airport has risen to five.

It's emerged a gang of eight, travelling in two vehicles, was being pursued by private security officers from Empangeni.
It's believed they had robbed a clothing outlet.
Police spokesperson Jay Naicker says it's alleged they broke into the shop, held up the security guard and stole blankets and clothing.
"They then fled from the scene, fortunately the security company from the Emangeni area picked up and immediately alerted all role players that the two vehicles were travelling towards Durban."
