Deadly Tongaat shooting related to illegal taxis - Santaco
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Santaco in KZN says last week's deadly shooting in Tongaat
could be linked to a feud between illegal taxi operators that were recently
removed.
In one incident, the three victims are believed to have been a local taxi boss's bodyguards.
He survived the suspected hit.
The taxi council's provincial spokesperson Sifiso Shangase says it's clear the taxi owner was being targeted, as he was recently elected chairperson of the local taxi association.
Shangase says a short while later, over 100 members and their vehicles were disqualified and prohibited from operating.

"So many individuals attempted to be legitimised as operators without meeting the requirements.
"Eventually they then took the decision in consultation with various stakeholders including the department to look into who qualifies to be called an operator.
"It seems from the number of people who were excluded by the requirement, those individuals, a suspicion has been created that it's them who are now retaliating."
