DA urges immediate implementation of festive road plan

The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal says the province’s road safety plan for the festive season must be implemented sooner.

The party's asking the Transport MEC Sipho Hlomuka not to wait until December to put the plan into action.

The call comes after a spate of deadly crashes on the province's roads, with the community of Pongola still reeling from the truck and bakkie smash, that claimed the lives of 20 people - 18 of them children.

The party's Sharon Hoosen says they're also concerned about reports they have received from traffic authorities of a shortage of blood-alcohol testing kits.

"The DA has received reports from a number of law enforcement officers in this province that there is a shortage of blood-alcohol testing kits. How can senior politicians of this province commit to this province on safety when key resources have not been allocated to law enforcement officers?

"The DA is calling on the MEC and the premier to start implementing the festive season plan now and not wait until the 15 December to activate this. People are dying on our roads everyday and there should be measures in place now."
