The City's Acting Manager Musa Mbhele revealed in an Executive Committee Meeting on Tuesday that a budget of five hundred thousand would be allocated for clothing allowance for bodyguards.

The DA eThekwini Caucus leader Nicole Graham says there is no need for this allowance.

"We are facing the worst service delivery crisis that the city has ever seen and we need to focus on using every last Rand and cent that we have to improving the state of services and the lives of ordinary people.

"This is a nice-to-have, its not a necessity and the ANC's continuous insistence on spending money on things that are not necessary just shows the altitude and approach to the community of this municipality."

The Inkatha Freedom Party's (IFP) Mdu Nkosi says they are not opposed to the allowance but adds it will have to be closely monitored.

"It is important that they must be monitored since the municipality is providing them.

"In terms of the dress code, we need to make sure that they are doing exactly what is expected from them because it can't be correct that a mayor is going to meetings or a speaker or anyone, but when they come there, they are not dressed properly.

"So it is in line with that, as IFP we concluded that we need to support the item."
