DA: Insured motorists shouldn't pay RAF levy
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The DA says its proposal to lower the country's fuel costs include doing away with the Road Accident Fund levy for certain motorists.
"We are proposing through a SARS tax rebate to exempt bus, taxi, agriculture and transport companies as well as private commuters who pay for comprehensive, third-party insurance to be exempted from the Road Accident Fund levy currently a further R2.18 per litre," says the DA's Shadow Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Kevin Mileham.
The party's outlined several measures that government can adopt to bring relief to consumers overburdened with rising food, fuel and service delivery costs.

According to current indications, we're expected fork out an additional R4 a litre hike for petrol next month.
"This makes role of the RAF unnecessary for all drivers who have such insurance," says Mileham.
"In addition to reducing fuel prices this move will significantly lower the cost of food and other goods as fully insured bus, taxi and transport companies will be able to pass that saving of R2.18 per litre on to commuters and consumers."
