Computicket slapped with R11m fine by Competition Commission
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Competition Commission has fined Shoprite-Checkers wholly-owned Computicket with a fine of more than R11 million.
The commission found that Computicket entered into exclusive deals with theatres and promoters which excluded other competitors from entering the ticketing market.
It also distributed tickets for entertainment events, buses, flights, hotel accommodation, and holiday packages.
Spokesperson Sipho Ngwema said the deals were done between 2013 and 2018.
"The commission found that the effect of the exclusive agreements concluded between Computicket and inventory providers was to exclude competitors of Computicket from entering or expanding in the market for outsourced ticket services, and depriving end-consumers of choice.

"The commission found that Computicket had entered and enforced exclusive agreements with a significant majority of inventory providers, and accordingly decided to refer the matter to the Competition Tribunal for prosecution."
In January 2019, the Tribunal imposed a fine of R20 million against Computicket for the same contravention from 2005 to 2010.
