DA in KZN: eThekwini facing secondary disaster
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal says eThekwini residents have suffered a secondary disaster following the recent floods.
The party on Monday detailed what it says is the true state of the province and eThekwini Municipality following last month's devastation.
"Many of our people still remain without water," said provincial leader Francois Rodgers.
"Many of our people still struggle with electricity outages or no electricity.
"Many people are still homeless and find themselves in community halls and now we have a compounded problem where some of the sewerage spills are finding their way into the water sources and that in itself is a compounded problem as a result of the floods."
The party said there's been a lack of political leadership in the aftermath.

It's accused eThekwini's Mxolisi Kaunda of being an absent mayor, who they claimed is unwilling or unable to lead response efforts.
The KZN DA offered some solutions in their eight-page document.
"We need to understand if there is a disaster management centre up and running. The rains and the floods might have come and gone, but the province still faces severe disaster, and we need to effect some sort of plan and we need to establish who is running that and that all spheres of government are in fact part of that process," the party said.
"One if the other things we call for is for the provincial government to establish if national government is going to be funding part of the relief. If they are, then how much of it? and how will the money be accessed?"
