The ANC in the eThekwini region on Monday revealed that one of its councillors and several suspects were arrested in connection with the murders of the party's ward candidate Siyabonga Mkhize and member Mzukisi Nyanga in Cato Crest in November.

They were gunned down after going on a door-to-door campaign in the area ahead of the local government elections.

The DA's eThekwini chief whip Thabani Mthetwa has urged the council speaker to seek clarity on the matter.

"We have also written to the speaker of council, Thabani Nyawose requesting him that the councillor from office for the duration of his murder trial because what we don't want is for the municipality to be associated with such very gruesome killing of political leaders.

"It is our considered view that as the DA we cannot afford to be associated with one of the councillors being arrested for such a serious crime."
