DA calls for urgent meeting in wake of Brucella outbreak

The DA in KZN wants an urgent update on biosecurity in the province in the wake of the Brucella outbreak.
Yesterday, the KZN Agriculture Department confirmed 400 cows had tested positive for the bacterial disease - mostly in the northern parts of KZN.
Brucella is said to cause miscarriages, infertility and reduced milk production and weak joints in both livestock and humans.
DA KZN spokesperson on Agriculture Chris Pappas says this is alarming.

The DA has called on an urgent sitting of the agricultural portfolio committee to deal with this matter as well as to get an update on a report that was promised a year ago, regarding the state of biosecurity in the province.
MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi joined a vaccination drive in KwaHlabisa today.
The department says over 3 000 cattle have received jabs.
"At at the mobile clinic, we have all the implements to assist but where there's a need to transport and call for extra help to come collect the cattle that have been found to be positive.
