DA calls for SAHRC to investigate Addington Hospital
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The Democratic Alliance in KZN has written to the SA Human Rights Commission to launch investigations into Durban's Addington Hospital.
The party's Rishigen Viranna said they have received reports that none of the lifts at the high-rise building are working, meaning staff and patients are being forced to use the stairs.
Some were rescued a week ago, after apparently getting stuck in the hospital's only working lift, before it plunged to the ground floor.
"We see a complete dysfunctionality there and the violation of South Africans' right to access healthcare as well as a violation of the right of dignity.
So we are hoping that the SAHRC investigates this violation and hold MEC Simelane-Zulu accountable for this," she added.

KZN Health's Agiza Hlongwane says they're equally concerned.
"Two lifts have been repaired, both are working to ensure continuity, unfortunately, the wrong parts arrived yesterday, which were meant to repair lifts.
Those parts have been returned, more parts are expected in due course, and will result in more lifts being operational by next week.
