Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng presided over the election in the National Assembly a short while ago.

"Only one candidate has been nominated - namely the honourable Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa. The nomination is in order. Accordingly, in terms of item 5 of part A of schedule 3 to the Constitution - I declare the honourable Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa duly elected as president of the republic of South Africa," Chief Justice Mogoeng said.

The election follows Jacob Zuma's resignation last night. Ramaphosa was the only nomination put forward for the election.

"Honourable Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa - congratulations on your election as the president of South Africa," Mogoeng said.

Clapping and singing erupted in the house when Mogoeng congratulated President Ramaphosa.

Opposition parties took to the podium to commend the president elect. The DA's Mmusi Maimane expressed his well wishes but promised to hold Ramaphosa accountable.

In response, the incoming president said as a task already assumed as deputy president - he will continue to seek the opportunity to work with all political parties.

Earlier, following a number of interruptions from EFF MPs, the party left the parliamentary chamber.
