#CrimeStats KZN records highest number of murders

KZN's murder rate has gone up and the province has also recorded the highest number of murders in South Africa in the past financial year.

The SAPS released the latest crime statistics - which reveal that the murder rate in the country has increased.
A total of 4382 people were murdered in KZN from last April to this March year - a 9.2% increase.
Two KZN police stations, Umlazi and Inanda, featured in the country's worst five in terms of the number of murder cases opened there.
The province also had the highest number of murders of women and children in the country.

Crime registrar Norman Sekhukhune has told Parliament that nationally, mob justice is one of the biggest contributing factors to the murder rate.
"With the provinces contributing the highest - Gauteng with 264, Western Cape with 173, KwaZulu-Natal, 145 and Limpopo had 95 murders related to mob justice or injustice," Cele said.

He's also said political killings are an almost exclusively KZN issue.
"When we look at the political-related murders, these were almost exclusively based in the KwaZulu-Natal province, with 30 having occurred in that province and two having occurred in the Western Cape," he said.
