Almost 4 000 women and children were murdered in South Africa over the past year.
The shocking figure was revealed in parliament this morning, when police released their crime statistics for the 2017/2018 financial year.
Crime registrar Norman Sekhukhune - who led the presentation - says the figures show an increase in this type of crime.
"2930 women were murdered in this financial year. Girls were 294, boys were 691. Overall, the percentage contribution was 19,3% of the murders," he said.
The country's overall murder rate is also up by 6,9% as compared to the previous financial year. A total of 20 336 people were murdered in South Africa from April 2017 to March 2018.
Earlier today, Police Minister Bheki Cele told Parliament's portfolio committee 57 South Africans are killed daily.
