Court awaits further statements in Phoenix assault case
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The case against a couple arrested over the assault of a four-year-old Phoenix girl has been postponed due to outstanding statements and for a trial date to possibly be arranged.
The mother and her boyfriend were arrested earlier this year when a video showing the child being severely beaten emerged.
Apart from the pair’s relatives in the public gallery, the courtroom was empty when they appeared in the dock.
State Prosecutor, Ishara Sewnarayan told the court that the State had concluded its first interview with the child and would be interviewing her again.
The court also heard that medical reports were complete and that the State intends to call doctors to testify.

In the video footage, a woman is seen kicking and beating the little girl until she appeared unconscious.
The State also says video footage of the assault, which was allegedly filmed by the boyfriend, will prove common purpose in the case.
