Cosatu joins growing call for the removal of Zandile Gumede as MPL

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has added its voice to calls for the African National Congress (ANC) to reverse its decision to deploy Zandile Gumede to KZN Legislature.

Gumede was recalled as eThekwini mayor last year due to the fraud and corruption case against her - involving a R400 million solid waste tender.

Cosatu says the time has come for President Cyril Ramaphosa to take the fight against corruption head-on if it's to be won.

Cosatu General-Secretary, Bheki Ntshalintshali has been reporting back on the trade union federation's central executive committee meeting held over the last two days.

He says workers are fast losing confidence in the ANC's willingness to fight corruption.

"They are starting to view their public statement as nothing but phoney outrage for political propaganda purposes.

"It does not help for the ANC to issue statements for condemnation regarding the state of corruption while reinstating people implicated in the VBS looting scandal and also promoting former mayors - facing corruption allegations - to higher positions.

"We call on the ANC NEC to reverse this political and reckless decision."
