Sihle Zikalala explains why Zandile Gumede was moved to Legislature
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
ANC KZN Chairperson, Sihle Zikalala says Zandile Gumede's move to the KZN Legislature was done to solve a problem in the eThekwini Council where she was still serving as a councillor.
Gumede has a fraud and corruption case pending against her and several other co-accused.
She was recalled as eThekwini mayor last year following her arrest by the Hawks.
In a surprise move she was sworn in as an MPL on Wednesday, to take over the role left behind by Ricardo Mthembu who's died of COVID-19.
Speaking in a virtual meeting with the South African National Editors Forum earlier, Zikalala said there was a choice for Gumede to either step down as councillor or be reassigned.

"Now the ANC to solve that particular problem, decided that we must take her to the legislature, she is a member of the legislature not that she is deployed in an executive position in the legislature.
He added that it is expected in the society that when a person is charged, that person will be removed.
"I think that's what the ANC nationally is trying to now put together, have a clear guideline in terms of dealing with this situation," said Zikalala.
