Continued vandalism frustrates eThekwini street light repairs
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
As
the repairs to Durban's street lights continue, eThekwini officials have been
speaking about the vicious cycle of vandalism, saying it's frustrating.
“We are done repairing those street lights. Criminals pounce again and we go back to square one, we are spending millions replacing this infrastructure,” says the city's spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela.
Technicians are busy fixing faulty or broken street lights on the N3, M4, Umgeni Road and the M19 as well as residential areas.
Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda announced this week that a crime summit will be held to address the challenges around theft and vandalism.

Mayisela says resources are also tight.
"Unfortunately we won't be able to deploy security guards on every street pole, it's impossible. So we all need to be vigiliant and mustn't be left to government alone to clamp down on this illicit behaviour."
